What is the “Package of 5” Immunity Test?

This blood test panel checks for immunity (protection) against five vaccine-preventable diseases:

  1. Measles (Rubeola)

  2. Mumps

  3. Rubella (German Measles)

  4. Varicella (Chickenpox)

  5. Hepatitis B

It measures IgG antibody levels in your blood to determine if you have sufficient immunity, either from past vaccination or natural infection.

Why is This Test Required?

Under U.S. healthcare, education, and employment laws, many institutions require proof of immunity for:

  • Healthcare workers (Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes) – OSHA & CDC guidelines

  • College/University students (Especially in medical/nursing programs)

  • Teachers & school employees

  • Military personnel & international travelers

Legal Basis:

  • CDC Recommendations – Healthcare workers must show immunity to prevent outbreaks.

  • State School/University Mandates – Many require MMR & Varicella titers for enrollment.

  • OSHA Regulations – Hepatitis B immunity is often required for at-risk occupations.

How is Testing Done?

  • Blood draw (serum test) – Measures quantitative IgG antibodies.

  • Results Interpretation:

    • Positive (Immune): IgG levels above lab cutoff = Protected.

    • Negative (Non-Immune): Low/absent antibodies = May need booster vaccination.

What Happens if You’re Not Immune?

  • Revaccination Required (e.g., MMR or Hepatitis B booster).

  • Exemption Options (Medical/Religious, varies by state).

  • Employer/School Compliance – You may be restricted from clinical work/classes until resolved.
